Whither Worship?

Roman Catholic Liturgy
40 Years after Vatican II

Forty years after the close of the Second Vatican Council, the Roman Catholic Church in the United States and worldwide continues to plumb the meaning of the Council's first document, Sacrosactum concilium, Rev. Jan Michael Joncas, noted theologian and liturgical composer, told a gathering of 100 EPS friends at the third installment of "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Visions of Vatican II, Dreams of a New Generation."

The October 2006 event attracted about 100 EPS friends and included response from Thomas Stehle, EPS Instructor and Director of Liturgy and Music at Our Lady of Mercy, Potomac, MD, and EPS Washington-Virginia evening program graduate Sandra Coles-Bell.

"Insofar as liturgy is the priestly act of Jesus Christ offering praise and thanksgiving to God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit conjoined with all the angels and saints, the "Heavenly liturgy" marks eternity as it always has," Father Joncas said before the talk. "Even if we only consider the earthly liturgy, the central actions (sacraments, sacramentals, Liturgy of the Hours) and effects of the liturgy (sanctifying life, time, and space) haven't changed."

But, Fr. Joncas added, "What has changed (and rather radically) are 1) the celebrational patterns of the earthly liturgy; 2) understanding of these changed celebrational patterns; and 3) expectations of those who participate in them."
