EPS Honors February 3, 2007 Hundreds Turn Out to Celebrate Sister Mary Ann’s Tenure with Mass, Banquet
EPS Friends Mary Elizabeth
Murphy, Mary Furman and More than 250 EPS friends streamed into Notre Dame Cathedral at Trinity University for a special Mass to begin the celebration of more than a decade of Sr. Mary Ann Cook SND as president. Sister Mary Ann officially steps down on Feb. 12 when Dr. Margaret Wilson McCarty takes the helm. Rev. Carleton Jones, O.P., pastor of St. Vincent Ferrer, EPS’s former New York location in Manhattan, was the celebrant and Rev. Lawrence Boadt, C.S.P., was the homilist at the Mass, which was followed by a packed luncheon at Trinity’s Social Hall. Among the speakers honoring Sr. Mary Ann’s commitment, vision, humor and long service were EPS Foundress, Sister Joan Bland, who amused the crowd with her description of Sister Mary Ann as an early eager and enthusiastic supporter of EPS. (Sister Mary Ann has long said she was “converted’’ to EPS’s mission reluctantly.) Trinity University President Patricia McGuire surprised Sister Mary Ann with the announcement that the university has decided to establish a scholarship in her name. Sister Mary Ann received her bachelor’s degree at Trinity and later returned as a teacher and then Academic Dean. Board Trustee Richard Urban presented Sr. Mary Ann with a special gift from the board: a week at Loyola Retreat House in Southern Maryland, as well as a basket of well-wishes from guests. Other speakers included former EPS Trustee Vincent Barbetta, who served as master of ceremonies, Board Chair Charlie Taney and Vice President Susan Timoney. Bridgeport Bishop William Lori and Dr. McCarty, both unable to attend the event because of longstanding commitments, feted Sr. Mary Ann by letter. Dr. Timoney presented Sr. Mary Ann with a commissioned portrait of the president painted by EPS friend Peter Robinson, who also painted a portrait of Sister Joan for EPS’s 25th anniversary. Both paintings will hang in EPS offices at Trinity. In addition, EPS staff paid tribute to their president, Mary Ann, with a humorous song spelling out her name, set to the tune of the Sound of Music’s “Do Re Me.” EPS Milestones under the Direction of Sr. Mary Ann Cook
