Sr. Joan Bland’s Passing

Our
dear EPS foundress, Sr. Joan Bland, SND, passed away Sunday,
June 29, 2008 at 9:45 a.m. Sr. Joan would have celebrated
her 91st birthday on Monday, June 30th. How appropriate
that on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, that Sr. Joan
would go to our good God. Her youngest sister, Ginny, had
been sitting with her for several days before she died.
We
do not know any of the arrangements at this time, but we
will send out e-mails when the details are finalized. We
would appreciate it if you would spread the word to others
in the EPS community whose e-mail address we may not have.
EPS
has lost our foundress, whose vision made it possible for
over 2,700 lay leaders to be educated in their faith. And,
these lay leaders in turn, have given back in service to
their parishes and dioceses throughout the 30 years of our
history. Sr. Joan will be sorely missed by all who love
her.
As
our 30th anniversary will be celebrated this
fall, we would love to collect your favorite memories,
stories or photos of Sr. Joan. Please send them via e-mail
by July 15th to Diana Snider at
sniderd@trinitydc.edu.
On
behalf of the EPS community, I thank you for your prayers on
behalf of Sr. Joan, her family, and her beloved Sisters of
Notre Dame de Namur. Your prayers have been a source of
inspiration and comfort.
Dr. Maggie
McCarty
EPS President

EPS instructor Thomas Stehle
named Director of Music
for Papal Liturgy
Longtime
EPS instructor Thomas Stehle has been named
the director of music for the Papal
Liturgy, which will take place April 17 during Pope Benedict XVI’s
visit to the Archdiocese of Washington. The liturgy will be
celebrated at the new National’s baseball stadium.
“It’s a tremendous honor, and I feel that it’s a tremendous
responsibility,” Stehle told the Catholic Standard newspaper. Stehle
is a longtime liturgy instructor for EPS, and was one of the
presenters at the 2006 Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
symposium, “Whither
Worship: Roman Catholic Liturgy 40 Years after Vatican II.”
Stehle will direct a 250-voice Papal Mass Choir, along with
additional ethnic choirs, for a total of about 550 voices, as well
as a pianist, organist and a 25-piece orchestra, according to the
Standard article.
Stehle, who serves as pastoral associate for liturgy and music at
Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Potomac, said the liturgy's music will
highlight the rich cultural heritage of the archdiocese.

EPS President Margaret McCarty, right, and past
president Sr. Mary Ann Cook, SND, join Archbishop Donald Wuerl and
Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Papal Nuncio to the United States at the
annual benefit for St. Luke's Institute, a treatment facility for
clergy, religious and others involved in parish ministry.
